What would be covered under different types of maintenance checks?
I’m doing a paper for a class on maintenance of airplanes, and I see a lot of articles talking about A,B,C, and D checks. the checks are basically what needs to be inspected every 500 hours, 3 month, 12 month and 5 years, but none of the sites actually say what is inspected at these intervals. Does anyone have a site with sample checklists or able to throw out 2-3 things that would be looked at under each group?
Thank you
For A through E checks, items covered are determined by that specific aircraft manufacturer, the airline, and the FAA. The specific items in each check are usually “timed” items (items that have to be replaced in a certain amount of time), items that deteriorate (tapes, placards, o-rings inside parts, sealant around parts, etc), items that have to be lubricated, or items that undergo a lot of stresses in flight and have higher probability of failure. Each check has to be performed in a certain amount of time, like you said, and there are different levels of some checks (like in A1-A10 checks, an A2 check will have different inspection items than say an A4 check, but are very similar). C and D checks are usually referred to as “heavy check” because they require a heavy amount of manhours, and take days or even weeks to accomplish, and just about no panel goes unturned. They are much more detailed inspections, and will include things like checking flight control bushings, cables, looking for sheet metal cracks, performing Non-Destructive Testing to look for damage to parts, etc. Hope that helped!
