Gary Allan?
He’s one of the more underrated country singers in my opinion. He doesn’t get the accolades he deserves…for example, Watching Airplanes was one of the best songs on the radio this year, and better than anything Chesney or Rascal put out.
Among females, I always thought Chely Wright was underrated.
Who do you think is underrated?
I definitely agree that Gary Allan is underrated. I think as his career has gone on, the country/pop has gotten so much stronger. Living Hard was one of the best albums to come out in the last year. And it was barely a blip on the radar in the country scene. It’s too bad because I think Allan is one of the most original artists recording today.
As a proud Texan, I am tempted to say that Pat Green is underrated, but I’ve accepted that most people outside of the lone star state could care less about Pat Green. My underrated choice is going to be Trent Willmon. The guy charts the hits Beer Man, The Good Life, and On Again Tonight. And everything looks like it’s going good for him. Then he is rewarded by being released by his record company and has to go the Indy route for his last album. But hey, I could name 10 guys who you have never heard of that, like Willmon, are great performers that would have been superstars ten years ago.
As for the underrated lady, I always hated the way Mary Chapin Carpenter totally vanished from the radio when the army of blonde’s that got turned down on pop radio showed up on country radio. Such great songwriting and musical passion. But hey, who would want a song like “Twist and Shout” or “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” when you can unwind to “It’s That Kind of Day” or “Taking Off This Pain”?
